No call for liberation struggle: Chandy

Kasaragod: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has said he had not given any call for a ‘second liberation struggle’ against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule in the State.

“It is a fact that the prevailing political situation in Kerala warrants a second liberation struggle. However, neither I nor the Congress party has made any call for such a movement,” Chandy told reporters at Kanhangad, near here, on Tuesday.

The people’s rejection of the policies of the CPI(M)-led government in the Lok Sabha polls was a pointer to this and the people were ready to face such a situation, he said.

The ‘first liberation struggle’ in the State was spearheaded by the Church and organisations like the Nair Service Society (NSS) and the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam against the Communist government of 1957 led by E.M.S. Namboodiripad.

When his attention was drawn to Defence Minister A.K. Antony’s remark that the prevailing situation did not warrant a second liberation struggle, Mr. Chandy said he could not comment on the statement of a senior party leader.

The decision to remove T. Siddique as president of the Youth Congress in the State was made by the organisation’s central leadership, Mr. Chandy said.

No factional wrangles

He said the Congress party in Kerala no longer faced any factional wrangles as it had in the past and the Lok Sabha poll outcome was a pointer to the fact.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s reported remarks that it was not easy to enforce Goonda Act in the State only indicated the failure of the Home Department, he said. — PTI
