KOCHI: The Kerala State Matsya Mazdoor Sabha and the Seafood Workers Society have demanded immediate relief measures for shrimp peeling workers, boat crew and those in the export sector during the monsoon trawl ban period. Though trawling ban is necessary, large number of workers in the sector are struggling to survive during the ban period. The welfare measures announced by the authorities seldom reach the deserving sections, the sabha leaders said. The sabha leaders demanded that the welfare fund of the workers should be reconstituted so as to ensure that the benefits reach the workers. A separate Ministry for fisheries should be formed at the Centre, they demanded.
