Call for uniform retirement age

Staff Reporter

By university teachers’ body

TIRUCHI: The Association of University Teachers (AUT) has urged the State Government to follow uniform age of retirement for teachers as advocated by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to tide over the crisis caused by vacancies in many institutions of higher education.

Instead of re-employing teachers retiring in the middle of the year, May 31 could be fixed as the uniform date of retirement for all college teachers, just as increments are sanctioned uniformly on July 1, the AUT has suggested.

In a statement issued here today, K. Pandiyan, Zonal Secretary of AUT Tiruchi Zone, said availability of highly qualified and experienced teachers for ensuring academic continuity would be to the benefit of the students. Mr. Pandiyan cited the instances of central universities fixing 65 years as the age of retirement of teachers, teachers in State universities retiring at the age of 60 years, and principals in self-financing colleges holding the post till 65 years to make a strong plea for raising the retirement age of college teachers with immediate effect and fixing uniform date for retirement. Also, in consideration of the 11 months of service that the retiring teachers put in, one increment must be sanctioned notionally on the date of retirement for the purpose of computing all retirement benefits, Mr. Pandiyan said.
