A portion of Purasawalkam High Road has been dug for laying underground duct for cables.
CHENNAI: Chennai Cable Consortium (CCC) has started digging work on a two-km stretch on Purasawalkam High Road to lay a common underground duct for routing cables of television and Internet service providers.
“It is part of our ongoing operations to eliminate all aerial cables and lay dedicated cables beneath the ground. We have covered most of central Chennai till now,” said Radhakrishna Vittaldev, Secretary of CCC. Residents, however, complained that they were not informed why the digging was going on.
Began on Monday
“The work began on Monday night around 11 p.m. I asked the workers what was going on but they refused to tell me,” said Viji, a shopkeeper. Motorists using Purasawalkam High Road experienced a lot of difficulty. Parking along the road was also a problem. “I couldn’t sleep all night because the compressor machines were very loud,” said Anbhazhagan, a resident.
Month end
Cable laying work along the entire stretch would be completed by the month end, according to Mr. Vittaldev. He also said that the digging work would be taken up only during nights after most shops close.
