Bangalore: Of the State’s 410 cases of battle casualties (defence personnel killed or wounded in action), the next of kin of 332 have been provided with houses or cash entitlement through the Karnataka Governor’s Defence Fund.

The remaining 78 cases are pending owing to want of sites, completion of documents and disputes, said U.M. Uthaiah, director of the Department of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement.

He was speaking at the managing committee meeting of the Governor’s Defence Fund and Special Fund for Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Ex-servicemen on Wednesday at the Raj Bhavan. The meeting was chaired by Governor Rameshwar Thakur and attended by several armed forces officers.

Aim

The objective of the Karnataka Governor’s Defence Fund is to rehabilitate the next of kin of defence personnel and soldiers disabled in war and insurgent activities, and to extend welfare schemes to ex-servicemen and their dependents. It is aimed at meeting expenditure such as construction of a house in a place of their choice or in their home district. Financial entitlement for a house ranges from Rs. 3 lakh to Rs. 4.5 lakh.

The expenditure incurred by the fund in 2008-09 for house construction/ cash entitlement, uniform grants to students of four military hostels and other miscellaneous expenditure, amounted to Rs. 20 lakh.

On the pending cases, Mr. Uthaiah said that five acres of land, allotted for the construction of War Widow’s Colony as early as 1997 in Mallasandra is yet to be resolved because of legal complications.

A proposal has been submitted to the government to increase the grant for house construction by Rs. 1.5 lakh. The budget for the Governor’s Defence Fund for the year 2009-10 has been projected at Rs. 2.5 crore.
