Jailed for manufacturing substandard drug

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Third Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Hyderabad, on Monday convicted A. Vijaya Lakshmi of M/s Siran Pharma, Vijayawada, to undergo one year simple imprisonment and to pay a fine of Rs.5,000 for the manufacture and distribution of sub standard drug.

According to the Assistant Director (Drugs Control Administration, Visakhapatnam) Ravi Uday Bhaskar, the drug Cloxacillin capsules IP 250 mg (Batch no. CC2) was declared as ‘Not of the Standard Quality’ by the Government Analyst.

The firm has violated Section 18(a) (i) of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, punishable under section 27 (d) of the Drugs and Cosmotics Act, 1940.

The drug was picked up for analysis from the medical stores of the Government Hospital for Chest and Communicable Diseases, Visakhapatnam, in 1997.
