“Except for one person involved in the case, all abductors have been arrested”
GIVING DETAILS: Superintendent of Police (North) N.T. Sivadasan addressing a press conference in Puducherry on Thursday. PUDUCHERRY: The police have cracked the case of the kidnap of an engineering student and arrested 10 persons, including an engineering graduate and a catering student. Amith Kumar Porwal, a final year engineering student of a private college near Puducherry and son of a businessman, was kidnapped on June 10 and released four days later. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Superintendent of Police (North) N.T. Sivadasan said that except for one person involved in the case, all abductors were arrested. Three vehicles used by them have also been seized. Cases have been registered under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 364 (A) (kidnapping for ransom), he said. The gang carried out the kidnap after several days of planning, Mr. Sivadasan said. Kalai, a person who had passed out of the college where Porwal was studying, and Paulraj, a milk vendor who visited the victim’s house every day, helped the gang. Porwal’s bike was waylaid near his residence at Venkata Nagar. The gang that came in a car, sprayed chloroform on Porwal, took him to Chidambaram and then to Tiruchi, Mr. Sivadasan said. The police first registered a case of missing and then changed it to a case of kidnap after the businessman received calls demanding a ransom. The police collected information about the abductors and then asked the businessman to communicate with them, Mr. Sivadasan said. With the help of a private telecom service provider, the movements of the accused were monitored. When the abductors realised that they were being tracked, they set Porwal free. After he returned home, police sent three separate teams to different places in Tamil Nadu and arrested eight of the accused from Velankanni, Mr. Sivadasan said. Kalai and Paulraj were arrested at Puducherry. Mr. Sivadasan said that the gang had earlier planned to kidnap a few more persons but abandoned it later.
