460 children to get informal education

KANCHEEPURAM: A total of 460 children belonging to families that have migrated from different parts of the State to Kattankolathur block for employment in brick kiln units, have been absorbed into the informal education process implemented under the ‘Promoting decent work in brick kiln project.’

A survey conducted by the International Labour Organisation, the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and the Chengalpattu Area Brick Kiln Manufacturers’ Association (CABMA) has revealed that more than 1,200 families migrated from Madurai, Tirunelveli, Cuddalore and Villupuram districts were employed in 50 brick kiln units in Kattankolathur block and 574 children (in the 6-14 age group) belonged to these families.

Twenty ‘summer education centres’ were opened and 460 children brought under the informal education process.

The remaining children were admitted to regular schools, according to the project coordinator, Chengalpattu, P. Stephen.
