NEW DELHI: Fortis Healthcare on Wednesday announced the commencement of a crucial clinical trial that is expected to help in treatment of diabetes. Hospital Director and Head of the Department of Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, Dr. Anoop Misra, said the Fortis Hospital at Vasant Kunj would be the forerunner in the clinical trial of stem cell therapy that has been formally approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research. The research would be conducted on patients with diabetic foot ulcers. Fortis Healthcare has tied up with Beike Biotech India Private Limited for conducting the clinical trial. The stem cell trial for diabetic foot will start in the first week of July. Thirty-six patients will be enrolled for the study, out of whom 12 will receive stem cell therapy. All 36 patients will undergo extensive and comprehensive tests at regular intervals. With the prime focus of healing diabetic foot ulcers with stem cells, highly sophisticated tests like nuclear magnetic resonance angiography and peripheral arterial doppler screening would also be conducted along with routine investigations to assess new blood vessel formation. Breaking the barriers of the current treatment available for diabetic foot which is long and expensive, this study is expected to bring new hope.
