Letters to the Editor
This refers to the article “Kashmir’s rising tide of hate” (June 17). As a common Kashmiri, I know what is going on in the Kashmir Valley. The political parties and separatist forces are out to create mayhem for their selfish ends. While I admire the author for giving details about the killing of innocent people by militant groups, I wish he had mentioned the killings by the security forces too. I agree that Islamist groups and the media spread hate but there have also been incidents like the Kunan Poshpora outrage of February 1991, in which the army was accused of committing large-scale rape, and the brutal rape and murder of a teenager in Langate in 2007. Kashmir has become a football which is kicked by players from all sides. Noor ul Haq, Srinagar The article is right in debunking Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s claim that Islam and Hinduism are locked in an irreducible civilisational opposition. It is also right in portraying Asiya Andrabi as a religious fanatic. But it is certainly not justified in almost white-washing the security forces. In its editorial “Shopian tragedy” (June 11), The Hindu said Jammu and Kashmir is a State “with a history of covering up wrongdoing by men in uniform.” In another editorial titled “Criminals in combat fatigues” (Feb. 5, 2007), The Hindu decried the collaboration of some Rashtriya Rifles personnel in central Kashmir “with a group of rogue police officers to cold-bloodedly murder at least five innocent civilians, who were then passed off as terrorists.”Faizur Rahman, Chennai
