Pune to host World u-21 championship

Mumbai: The draw of lots here on Wednesday placed India with United States of America, Tunisia and Belarus in Pool ‘A’ of the 16-team Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) 2009 men’s junior World (under-21) Championship to be played at Balewadi, Pune from July 31 to August 9.

Defending champion Brazil has been placed in Pool ‘D’ with Russia, Canada and Poland. The draw was supervised by Shanrit Wongprasert, FIVB representative from Thailand.

India has gained entry as the host nation. Tunisia and Egypt have qualified from the African confederation, Iran and China from Asia, France, Belgium, Russia, Greece, Poland and Belarus from Europe, Cuba, Canada and USA from North and Central America and Brazil and Argentina from South America.

The 64-match competition will feature 24 first and second rounds each before a set of eight-match semifinal play-offs and eight match final round play-offs to determine the final positions.

The groupings: Pool ‘A’: India, USA, Tunisia and Belarus; Pool ‘B’: Iran, China, Egypt and Belgium; Pool ‘C’: Argentina, France, Cuba and Greece; Pool ‘D’: Brazil, Russia, Canada and Poland. — Special Correspondent
