Spurious liquor claims one life

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: A 55-year-old man was killed and at least 55 others taken ill after consuming toddy from different shops in the Pavaratty area, roughly 20 km from here, on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Padmanabhan, 55, of Vengidangu, a head-load worker. He had consumed toddy from a shop at Mecherippady, near Pavaratty, in the afternoon. He was rushed to the hospital where he died.

The condition of two others, Devan of Chukku Bazaar and Velayudhan of Mechippady, who were admitted to the Medical College Hospital, Thrissur, was stated to be serious. Those who were taken ill, mostly labourers, reportedly consumed liquor from various toddy shops in the Chukku Bazar, Mecherippady, Kannoth, Mullassery, and Venmanad areas under the Vadanappally excise range. The victims had been admitted to various hospitals in Chavakkad, Mullassery, Pavaratty and Thrissur.

Many of those who consumed toddy earlier in the day were also rushed to hospitals by their family members as the news spread.

The police sealed toddy shops in the area and the manager of one of the shops was taken into custody. P.C. Chacko, MP, called on the victims at various hospitals.
