U.S. Consul General hosts a reception at his residence
|
CHENNAI: A reception was organised by Andrew T. Simkin, Consul General of United States in Chennai, at his residence as part of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month.
Speaking on the occasion, the Consul General said this month was about breaking down barriers between people. “We celebrate LGBT Pride Month because it is important to acknowledge the dignity of every individual. We celebrate because we need the talents of all our people without regard to their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
A digital video conference with Matt Coles, a lawyer and LGBT activist based in New York, was organised recently. He said that the question of equal rights for LGBT people was very much a hot topic in the U.S. Americans were still grappling with the issues and made no claim to have all the answers.
Bryan W.Dalton, Consul and Chief Consular Services, spoke on the occasion.
On Monday, a movie on LGBT would be screened at the South Indian Film Chamber premises.
