Terminal for Lakshadweep vessels

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Union government has sanctioned the construction of a dedicated terminal for Lakshadweep-bound passenger and cargo vessels at the Kochi port at an estimated cost of Rs.32 crore.

The construction will be carried out by the Cochin Port Trust as a deposit work and the tenders will be invited within a month. The project is expected to be completed by 2011.

The port trust has earmarked five hectares in the port area (on the west side of Willingdon Island, between South Coal Berth and Workshop Jetty) for the purpose.

The port trust and the Lakshadweep Administration have signed a memorandum of understanding for leasing of the land, for the waterfront area and for construction of the terminal.

The proposed terminal will have a 300-metre berth, passenger waiting hall of about 1,100 sq m, cargo storage area of about 400 sq.m and vehicle parking area.
