CHANDIGARH: A group of organisations and individuals here have launched an association for the Right to Information (RTI) Act users. It has been mooted on the lines of the Bar Associations. The Association has already formed an online web portal — www.rightto.info — for easy registration of all RTI Act users across the country. “The veteran users of the RTI Act shall mentor the youth who are keen on using it. The platform shall prove to be a useful tool for transfer of knowledge from the experts to the youth in a very easy and systematic manner,” said Dr. Gaurav Chabbra, a local activist who used the RTI Act to bring about many changes in the policies of the local administration. “Though it will take some time to have a proper organisational structure in all those State headquarters where the office of the Information Commission operates but to kick-start the initiative we shall start with Punjab and Haryana,” said Hemant Goswami of “Citizens’ Voice”.
“In the four years since the RTI Act was passed, hundreds of scams and anomalies have been unearthed by its use. Meanwhile, we have realised that there is a need for greater interaction among the RTI Act users and further dissemination of information/awareness about it to the common public, which is why this RTI users Association is being formed,” added Kamal Anand of “People for Transparency”.
