Held on graft charge
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Officials of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption on Friday arrested the secretary of a cooperative housing society in Ponneri on charges of corruption.
According to sources in the agency, P. Bhuvaneswari (30) had approached the secretary, M. Sundararaman (53), for the release of a document that was mortgaged for obtaining a loan. Though the loan was repaid in September last year, there was a delay in releasing the document.
The accused demanded Rs.14,000 bribe to immediately arrange for the release of the document. He asked for Rs.4,000 to be paid as first instalment. Ms. Bhuvaneswari lodged a complaint with the DVAC following which a special team comprising Deputy Superintendent of Police S.M. Mohamed Iqbal and Inspector R. Ramachandran was formed. The team laid a trap and arrested Sundararaman in the presence of official witnesses after he took the bribe. He was produced in a court and remanded to judicial custody, the sources said.
