Nagercoil: A refresher workshop on ‘hazard risk management’ organised by the district administration in association with the Rural Uplift Centre, a non-governmental organisation based in Nagercoil recently evoked very good response. Block and district level workshops on disaster risk management, district level seminar on disaster risk management etc., were organised in order to create an awareness among the Government gfficials, representatives of local bodies and non-governmental organisations and general public of disaster, which could be defined a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society, causing widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses. Kanyakumari district disaster risk management project officer Vinothini organised nine disaster risk reduction management refresher programmes to block level task force teams for the chairperson of the block, block officers, union councillors, panchayat presidents, revenue officers and fire and rescue officers. The seminar on disaster risk management for district level task force team by Parivelan, disaster management consultant, spoke on Disaster Management Act 2005. He explained the roles and responsibilities of the proposed state and district disaster management authorities. In order to meet disaster risk posed by forms of disasters, a system of enormous task must be under taken such as – hazard analysis and dissemination to the community, identification of vulnerabilities to various hazards, eliminating or strengthening the vulnerabilities, capacitating the community for readiness and resilent to all types of hazards. There was a need for preparedness (disaster risk reduction management), which was less costlier than relief and rehabilitation measures undertaken after the damage caused by disaster.
