Call to develop Colachel minor port
Staff Reporter
Nagercoil: A cross section of unemployed youths and fishermen in different parts of the district urged the Central Government to develop Colachel minor port into a major port in order to create employment opportunities to the unemployed youths as well as to ensure sustainable livelihood for fisherfolk.
Colachel, a minor port used mostly by the fishing boats or vessels, is strategically located at the southern tip of India (Kanyakumari district).
It is also strategically located on the southwest coast of the Peninsula along the major shipping routes.
Studies conducted
The State Government earlier planned to develop the port into a major container port. In 1998, TACID, a private firm conducted a feasibility study and submitted the report to the Government.
Apart from that, as requested by the State Government, a Malaysian construction company also conducted another feasibility study and submitted the report.
Both the feasibility study of the reports indicated that the economic potential for the development of Colachel was very high.
But owing to inadequate fund, the State Government could not proceed further.
Subsequently, it had given no objection certificate to the Central Government long back to develop it as one of the major container ports. But the project is still pending with the Central Government.
According to official sources, the port traffic has significantly increased in the past years.
