‘Powerless’ denizens at their wit’s end

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: With respite from the gas-based power plants short-lived, city dwellers are once again facing haphazard cuts. Many localities have been experiencing tedious outages ranging from an hour to three for the past three days. The situation is especially irksome in areas that fall in the Ranga Reddy zone and do not constitute the “core city” as defined by the power distribution authorities. These include even prime localities such as Malkajgiri, Habsiguda, Nacharam, Moula-ali, Sainikpuri, Kukatpally, Kothapet, Vanasthalipuram, Uppal, and Medchal among others. “We have been having daily power cuts from 11.30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the past three days. Responses from the fuse-off call centre keep varying each time, from maintenance, tree cutting, to obstruction in incoming supply,” complained Md. Yousuf, a businessman from Kothapet. Complaints about two-hour power cuts are pouring in even from parts of “core city” such as West Marredpally, Tarnaka, and Begumpet. However, authorities maintain that power cuts of only half-an-hour are being imposed in the core city and one hour to two on the outskirts. “Supply from NTPC and RTPP has come down due to overhauling of units and the situation might improve in a week, a CPDCL official said.
