Nepal, India to address border problems

Prerana Marasini

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and visiting Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon have agreed to reactivate the existing mechanisms to resolve the problems along the border.

“Both sides agreed to reactivate their existing mechanisms so that the problems would be addressed at the local level and also at the central level,” Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Rajan Bhattarai told The Hindu. In recent days, there had been media reports here of alleged land encroachment by India, atrocities by the Shasastra Seema Bal (SSB), and displacement of thousands of Nepalese in Dang, Susta, and Bara. A team of Constituent Assembly members visited Dang and found some pillars missing.

India had sent its officers to Dang but did not find any evidence to support media reports, Mr. Bhattarai quoted Mr. Menon as saying.
