INTERESTING MOTIVATOR: Students of Government Middle School at Mudaliarpet try their hands at a puppet show during the two-day motivation camp on Sunday.

PUDUCHERRY: Manikandan was happy learning new things. From puppet-making to cooking nutritious food, this class VII student of Government Middle School, Mudaliarpet, has tried his hands at scores of activities at a two-day camp organised by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).

Aimed at motivating students belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities, SSA organised a two-day “Motivation Camp” at the Government Middle School, Mudaliarpet, during the weekend. An array of activities including drawing contest, sessions on puppetry and screening of films was lined up for students from Class VI to VIII.

For Manikandan, who was one among the 58 students who attended the camp, the film on poet Bharathiar which was screened during the camp was a source of inspiration. Asked what he learnt from the film, quick was his reply, “I learnt how patriotic he was and a person of great discipline too.” Echoing his views, Praveen, a student of Class VIII said that the film gave the message of how Bharathiar worked hard for the nation.

Other students like Vigneshwari and Janani were enthusiastic about learning different art forms such as drawing, puppet-making and clay-modelling.

On Saturday, a drawing contest with the theme of natural scenes, was conducted for the students, followed by screening of films on patriotic leaders – Bharathiar, Periyar and Kamaraj. A quiz competition based on the three films was held on Sunday, D. Aravinda Raja, one of the Programme Coordinators, said.

Sunday turned out to be an exciting day for the young students as they learnt plenty of handicrafts such as puppet-making and clay modelling. In the first session, art teachers explained how to make puppets and organise a puppet show. Different types of puppets such as string puppets and paper mache puppets were demonstrated during the session, he added.

“The students tried their hands at the craft. To disseminate the importance of appropriate food during the summer season, the students were taught how to prepare vegetable salads and fruit milk shakes,” Mr. Raja noted. An artisan demonstrated the art of clay modelling and making dolls with sponge later during the day.

“The main aim of the camp was to enable the students belonging to SC/ST communities to improve. It was basically to motivate them,” said another Programme Coordinator V. Ophilian. Prizes were distributed for the students at the end of the two-day camp. It was inaugurated by Deputy Director (Women), Directorate of School Education, V. Meenakshi. Headmistress of the school M.K. Premavilasini was also present.
