BPCL develops eco-friendly sulphide gas remover

Staff Reporter

BPCL entered into a pact with EIL, for commercialising this in-house development.

KOCHI: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited-Kochi Refinery has developed an environment protection technology for removing toxic hydrogen sulphide gas produced when crude oil is heated to high temperature.

The technology, developed with in-house expertise for desulphurization of very low pressure off-gas generated from Vacuum Distillation Unit is being commercialized, said a press release here.

BPCL entered into an agreement with Asia’s leading engineering company in the hydrocarbon sector, Engineers India Limited, for commercialising this in-house development.

E. Nandakumar, Executive Director, Kochi Refinery M. K. Joshi, Director (Technical), EIL, exchanged the collaboration agreement. The collaboration agreement was signed by John Minu Mathew, General Manager (Technical), Kochi Refinery on behalf of BPCL and by Ajay Deshpande, HOD (R&D), EIL.

The new technology is used to remove the hydrogen sulphide gas produced when crude oil is heated to high temperatures during separation of valuable products such as kerosene and diesel. The sulphur in the hydrogen sulphide gas so removed is recovered in pure solid form and can be used as feedstock in sulphur-based industries.

Since the hydrogen sulphide gas has been removed, the off gas burns clean with very low sulphur dioxide emissions.

The key challenge in developing this technology was the very low pressure of the off gas and the need to develop hardware, which could operate at such low pressures.

Patent

BPCL has applied for patent for this innovative technology to Register of Patents, Chennai, the press release added.
