ACCUSED: The nine members arrested by the DCIB police in Mangalore on Saturday.
MANGALORE: Nine people, suspected to be belonging to an underworld gangster, were arrested by the Dakshina Kannada police here on Saturday evening.
Those arrested by the District Crime Intelligence Bureau (DCIB) team have been identified as: Anish Shetty; Harisha, alias cocaine Harish; Deekshit Poojari; Deepak Poojari; Aneesh Lepak Lasrado; Ajay Karera; Ganesh; Nawaz; and Lokesh Devadiga. A 9-mm pistol, ten rounds of ammunition, five sharp weapons, and eight cellphones, along with a motorcycle, a car, and an autorickshaw have been recovered from the accused. Gopal B. Hosur, Inspector General of Police, Western Range, told presspersons that the DCIB team was formed following a complaint by an advocate at the Mangalore East Police Station on Saturday. The complaint said that a group of three youths came to his office on a motorcycle and demanded money at gun point, threatening to kill him, if he did not fulfil their demand by the evening. On learning that the gang was proceeding towards advocate’s office at 5 p.m., the DCIB team intercepted a car at Karngalpady and held five people travelling by it, Mr. Hosur said. On questioning them, the accused revealed their plan and based on that, the other four were held, he added.
The DCIB team, led by inspector Venkatesh Prasanna, will be given a reward of Rs. 25,000 for its efforts, he announced.
