PUDUCHERRY: Police opened fire in the air and resorted to mild lathicharge to prevent two groups of fishermen from attacking each other at Vembakeerapalayam on Saturday night. According to Superintendent of Police (North) N.T. Sivadasan, fishermen belonging to Chinnapattinam and Periyapattinam in Vembakeerapalayam almost came to blows after a verbal duel. The provocation was that the boats of fishermen from the two villages were damaged while anchoring at the Ariankuppam river mouth, he said. This resulted in heated exchanges between them. After reaching their villages, they gathered support to attack each other. In a scuffle that broke out, four fishermen sustained minor injuries, he said. Police fired one round in the air and chased away trouble-makers from the spot.
On Sunday, the police conducted house-to-house searches to locate trouble-makers and to find out whether weapons were concealed in the area, Mr. Sivadasan said.
