Bill on bio-fertilizer regulation soon: Minister

Special Correspondent

Meet on ‘Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria’ begins

‘AP will be the first State to bring about such a law’

‘Access of quality bio-pesticides to ryots ensured’

HYDERABAD: Minister for Agriculture N. Raghuveera Reddy on Sunday declared that a Bill to streamline the commercial aspects of bio-fertilizers would be introduced in the coming Budget session of the Assembly.

He was addressing about 300 scientists from across the world at the first four-day Asian ‘Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria’ (PGPR) Congress for Sustainable Agriculture, hosted by the Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) here. William Dar, Director-General, ICRISAT, attended.

Chemical fertilizer

Mr. Reddy said the use of bio-fertilisers would lessen the burden on farmers who were currently using more of high cost chemical fertilizer and at the same time improve nutritive quality of farm yields. Andhra Pradesh would be first State to bring about such a law.

Bio-pesticides

Likewise, he said the State had initiated several pro-active steps to ensure that farmers had access to quality bio-pesticides, with the active collaboration ANGRAU.

AP, he said, had a record of being the first to have the registered bio-pesticide products in the name of ‘Trichoderma’ and ‘Pseudomonas’ and appreciated the role of the varsity in achieving the rare distinction in the process of promoting bio- products in agriculture.

Pivotal role

The private industry too had a pivotal role to play in supply chain management to utilise the biological options available to the farming community.

The State Government offered open support to the industry that can commercially produce genuine bio-pesticides to serve farmers, he said.
