‘Sathari’ controversy ends

TIRUPATI: The TTD on Sunday amicably sorted out the controversy surrounding the offering of ‘Sathari’ (temple honours) to the Jeers of the Ahobila Mutt. This follows a clarification of the rule given by the TTD to the senior Jeer, Sri Narayana Yathindra Mahadesikan.

The Officer on Special Duty, A. Dharma Reddy, said that as per the usage and customs in TTD temples, when two seers visited the temple, ‘Sathari’ would be offered only to the senior and not to both of them.

Visit Tirumala

Convinced, the senior Jeer, accompanied by his junior — the 46th Jeer of the Mutt — Sri Ranganatha Yathindra Mahadesikan, visited the Venkateswara temple at Tirumala and offered prayers (Mangalasasanam). On their arrival at the temple, the senior Jeer was offered ‘Sathari’ by the priests. Both he and his junior were conducted into the temple.

Offers golden pitcher

On the eve of his visit, the 45th Jeer offered to the hill temple a golden pitcher weighing one kg and worth about Rs.15 lakh.

Mr. Reddy later took both Jeers to the Govindarajaswamy temple at Tirupati and arranged for darshan with all due honours. On Saturday, the Jeers skipped a visit to the temple on the ‘Sathari’ issue.
