Staff Reporter

in the State

They are in Bidar, Hassan, Mandya

and Raichur

BANGALORE: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has sought the help of Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on the issue of four government medical colleges getting Medical Council of India (MCI) recognition.

The colleges are in Bidar, Hassan, Mandya and Raichur.

In a letter to Mr. Azad, the Chief Minister said the MCI had accorded recognition only to the Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences and the Belgaum Institute of Medical Sciences.

He said the State Government had provided financial, administrative and other support to all the institutions as per MCI norms.

While the basic infrastructure for these colleges was ready, the teaching staff had to be provided from the Health and Family Welfare Department as well as by fresh recruitment.

The institutes were autonomous and could recruit teaching and non-teaching staff.

As the admission process to professional colleges was in progress, students, parents and the Government were concerned over the delay in these institutes getting MCI recognition, Mr. Yeddyurappa added.
