In black and white: One of the paintings on the terror attack. Bangalore: The 26/11 Mumbai attacks and the pain and suffering it wrought is still well-etched in the minds of many. A painting exhibition on this theme by Pradhan-Gond tribal artist Venkat Raman Singh Shyam has been organised by Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Bangalore, in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Manava Sangrahalay (IGMC), Bhopal, at Venkatappa Art Gallery. Inaugurating the exhibition, S. Settar, director of IGNCA, said he was glad to have this exhibition in Bangalore after its enthusiastic reception in Bhopal and Mysore. “The artist was due to arrive for an auction of his paintings at The Taj, Mumbai, when the attacks occurred. He has tried to translate his feelings and experience of those moments at Mumbai in these paintings,” he added. Speaking about the art of Gond paintings, Ashok Pradhan of IGMC said: “Gond paintings focus on ancestral beliefs, stories, rituals and scenes from day-to-day life. The eye is a common motif symbolising higher power. Grounds and walls are their canvas and they use limestone, charcoal and home-made colours.” Various incidents related to the attacks on Mumbai are depicted in the paintings.
