CHICKABALLAPUR: Union Minister of Law and Justice M. Veerappa Moily has sought the upgrading of State Highway 9 in Karnataka to a national highway.
In a letter to Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Kamal Nath, copies of which were released to the press here on Monday, Mr. Moily said the State Highway 9 passing through Yelahanka, Doddaballapur and Gauribidanur, which connects National Highway 7 at Somandepalli in the neighbouring Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, was a vital communication link for the region. To give an impetus to the development of the area, the State highway should be upgraded into a national highway at the earliest, Mr. Moily, who is MP for Chickaballapur, said. In another letter, Mr. Moily requested Railway Minister Mamata Banarjee to sanction another train to Chickaballapur from Bangalore via Yeshwantpur, Yelahanka and Devanahalli.
He urged Ms. Banerjee to sanction a new railway line from Chickaballapur to Puttaparti via Bagepalli and Gorantla, and another line from Chickaballapur to Muddenahalli, the birthplace of Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The Law Minister sought the inclusion in the Railway budget proposals for a link service to Mysore from Chickaballapur; doubling the rail line from Yelahanka to Yeshwantpur and construction of a new railway station at Chickaballapur.
