Letters to the Editor
This refers to the advertisement issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Department of Higher Education (June 20) announcing the launch of a toll-free anti-ragging helpline, advising students and guardians to report cases of ragging. While the initiative is welcome, the authorities should not stop with just making rules but take effective steps to implement the same and highlight the ill-effects of ragging through the visual media. Service organisations and NGOs should launch awareness campaigns against the menace in educational institutions. R. Narasimhan, Chennai The round-the-clock anti-ragging helpline will remove the lurking fear in the minds of freshmen, especially those who opt to stay in hostels. They will start their academic pursuit with a free mind. Their parents too can heave a sigh of relief. The move will instil fear and discipline in the minds of senior students who indulge in ragging. Since the college authorities are also going to be involved, the initiative will be foolproof. Setting up helplines in State capitals will help decentralise the initiative. R. Raghunathan, Chennai
