Sweet revenge for Mohun Bagan

KOLKATA: Avenging its recent loss in the final of the senior knockout championship, Mohun Bagan, en route to the final of the P. Sen Trophy, defeated Kalighat by seven wickets at the Eden Gardens here on Monday.

In what was billed as the match of the season, the two teams bolstered their line-ups with outstation recruits. However, Mohun Bagan had the last laugh in hot and humid conditions.

Kalighat, which elected to bat, was in trouble straight away against some inspired bowling by Akhlak Ahmed (two for 29), L. Balaji (two for 32) and Shib Sankar Paul (two for 19) before Bengal off-spinner Ritam Kundu (four for 11) spun a web around the rival batsmen.

Only Shreevats Goswami (33, 35b, 6x4), the Indian colts opener, showed the gumption to face the star-studded Bagan bowling attack. Kalighat managed only 116 in 28.4 overs. Even the presence of Wasim Jaffer (2) failed to raise the spirits of Kalighat’s batting.

Bagan’s reply was anything but solid as it slumped to 31 for three before captain Manoj Tiwary (53 not out, 51b, 8x4) and Kamal Hasan Mondal (32 not out, 46b, 6x4) added 88 runs in an undefeated fourth wicket partnership to deny Kalighat a shot at its fourth title of the season. Bagan reached the victory target in 22.3 overs.

L. Balaji will not be available for the final against Town Club on Wednesday.
