13 killed in accident

Tirupur: Thirteen persons were killed in a road accident involving four vehicles near Palladam in the district on Monday. Seven sustained injuries. Of the deceased, 11 were travelling in a van from Coimbatore to Palladam for an engagement function and two in a car were going from Coimbatore to Karur.

The deceased were identified as Suresh (32), the van driver, Abdullah, Rahmatullah (55), Tajunisa (50), Fatima Suhara, Bahrunisa, Najira Banu (30), Rahmatullah (41), Mohammed Kani (43), Meeran (45) and Rajarnisa (all passengers of van), and Gopalakrishnan (65) and his son, Ratinaraj (35), both travelling in the car. All victims belong to Coimbatore.

The injured, including a lorry driver and cleaner, were admitted to various hospitals.

Police sources said that the van collided with a lorry while it was trying to overtake a car. In the process, the van hit the car killing both the persons inside. A child travelling in the van escaped unhurt.

Superintendent of Police S. Santhi visited the spot.
