KRISHNAGIRI: Students of the Government Middle School at Hanumantheertham, near Uthangarai, on Monday boycotted classes demanding that the Government upgrade their school as high school. Parent Teachers’ Association members also joined the agitation supporting the demand.

Shops also downed shutters.

The agitation was led by the Parent Teachers’ Association president M. Parthiban.

Mr. Parthiban told The Hindu he said the school was started in 1965 as a primary school and later upgraded as a middle school.

Two hundred and forty two students, including 104 girls, are studying in the school.

“As per the decision taken at the PTA meeting, Rs. 1 lakh was paid to the government as deposit and nine acres were allotted to the school. The Secretary, Education Department, Kutralingam, promised that the school will be upgraded during this academic year, but nothing has been done so far,” he added.

Chief Educational Officer M. Baskaran rushed to the village and promised that he would take up the issue with the Director of School Education following which the agitation was withdrawn.
