Bangalore: The Metro Plus Lifestyle Show 2009, the ongoing consumer fair at The Palace Grounds, drew to a close on Monday. The exhibition had hordes of people flocking to the venue to buy consumer goods, artefacts, handicrafts, furniture and other items sourced from within the country and abroad. Taking advantage of the pleasant weather, many Bangaloreans visited the show on the weekend. Women came in large numbers as entry was free for them. Predictably, there was a huge rush at stalls selling consumer durables and handicrafts. Apart from this, stalls selling self-defence products and services also attracted a lot of curious onlookers. The products ranged from pepper sprays, intruder alarms, CCTVs and other innovative products. Popular stallRana Singh, dealer at the Cobra pepper spray stall, said that self defence had become extremely essential as today’s work culture required one to travel at night, and sometimes even out of town. S. Deepika, a software professional who made enquiries at the outlet, said that she was concerned about the rise in attacks on single women, and anything that enhanced the safety of women was welcome. Purchasing pepper spray bottles for her two teenage daughters, Shilpa Rao, a home-maker from Indira Nagar, said that she could now let her daughters travel on their own without much anxiety. The food court put up at the exhibition served a variety of juices and snacks. It was a big draw with all the visitors and children thronged the ice-cream stalls.
