Dialogue on queer issues

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: As a part of the ongoing Karnataka Queer Habba, a dialogue on issues concerning the Dalits and sexuality minorities was held on Monday.

The discussion began with participants sharing their experiences of being discriminated against both on the grounds of belonging to a “lower” caste and not fitting into a specific gender role. Participants spoke about how they faced discrimination when it came to renting a house or getting jobs.

Differences

Manohar of Aneka, one of the organisations which is part of the Karnataka Queer Habba, said: “The idea behind this discussion is to look at the similarities and differences between discrimination on the basis of caste and sexuality.” One of the differences pointed out was that a person belonging to the sexuality minority group had to often deal with rejection from family and withdrawal of financial and emotional support, while the Dalits do not face discrimination from within their family.
