Congress welcomes ban

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Congress has welcomed the Centre’s decision to ban the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and declare it a terrorist organisation.

Describing the CPI (Maoist) as a guerrilla outfit, party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said that although law and order was a State subject, the ban would help the affected States take stringent action against those indulging in violence and unlawful activities. However, the government would also continue to make efforts to address the situation politically, he said.

Mr. Ahmed said the affected States should now come out with a white paper, spelling out measures taken by them to deal with the naxalites.

He said the Centre had allocated Rs. 1,300 crore and had established a COBRA Force to deal with the naxalites.
