NEW DELHI: With ample job opportunities available in the development sector in today’s world, Jamia Millia Islamia here is offering a course for students keen on working in this field. The Department of Social Work teaches the one-year part-time PG diploma course in management of NGOs. The course has been running for the past four years with several former students finding good placements in the NGO sector. “In this changing world, NGOs are no longer considered the domain of well-meaning ‘jholawallahs’. Nor is it believed that developmental work can be undertaken by anyone. The running of an NGO requires a set of specific skills that can only be acquired through rigorous training,” says Rakhshanda Jalil, director of media and culture at Jamia. About 45 seats are available for the programme. The course is taught by senior faculty members of the Department of Social Work, which is supplemented by lectures from several field practitioners. Classes are held in the evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. between Wednesday and Friday every week, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Candidates can utilise the library facility, while reading material will also be provided to them. The fee for the one-year course is Rs.11,400. The last date for submission of application forms has been extended from June 2 to June 26. Candidates can collect the application form along with the prospectus for Rs.200 from the Jamia campus. Forms can also be downloaded from http://www.jmi.nic.in
