remnants OF THE PAST: various types of caps worn by police forces from many lands, presented at the exhibition in Kottayam on Tuesday. This is an exhibition which gives one a peep not only into the past, but also into the aspirations of the police force in Kerala. The exhibition has been organised as part of the 26th State conference of the Kerala Police Association (KPA) here. It is part of the efforts from the police to make them more people-friendly. Showcased are old photographs and copies of original documents explaining the evolution of the constabulary in the Travancore, Cochin and Malabar segments of what today constitutes Kerala. Also on display are the uniforms of the police force from the French-influenced Mahi on the Kerala coast to that of the informal T-shirts of the New York police. The evolution of the Kerala police from the “Kolkaaran” of yesteryear to the modern Indian Police Service officer through pictures draws the crowd while the uniforms of various police forces too are a hit with the public. The depiction of the colonial police force in full regalia during ceremonial parades and copies of various royal proclamations too are on display. The exhibition also gives a glance of the evolution of events that resulted in the formation of the Kerala Police Association in 1980 and honours the early leaders. The exhibition also pays tributes to police personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty. One of the interesting segments of the exhibition is the one depicting the cartoons on the police, which have appeared in journals. Also interesting is the segment dedicated to the artistic talents of the policemen in the Kerala. Photographs taken by and pictures drawn by members of the association have been showcased separately.
