IGNOU to launch associate degree programme in community colleges
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: From next month, students can apply for a two-year associate degree programme being launched by Indira Gandhi National Open University in community colleges across the country. The initiative will be inaugurated by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal on July 4.
Already, 100 institutions have registered with IGNOU to implement the scheme, according to pro-vice-chancellor Latha Pillai. She was explaining the initiative to stakeholders attending a national workshop on institutionalisation of India’s community colleges here on Monday.
IGNOU is working to get the associate degree recognised, both by regular universities for lateral transfer, as well as for employment in government jobs.
Although Tamil Nadu has been a pioneer in the community college movement with over 140 institutions in the State, few have registered for the scheme yet. Xavier Alphonse, Director of the Indian Centre for Research and Development of Community Education, says at least 60 institutions will register over the next few weeks.
