Andhra Pradesh woman says train hijack accused was her son

CHENNAI: The Crime Branch CID police investigating the train hijack case are close to achieving a breakthrough with a woman of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, claiming that the unidentified dead person was her son.

The case pertains to the hijack of a suburban train at the Moore Market Complex here on April 29.

The train was made to collide head-on with a goods train in Vyasarpadi Jiva railway station. Four persons died in the incident. The identity of a male body remained a mystery.

Agency sources told The Hindu on Tuesday that the woman identified the dead person, the prime suspect in the case, as her son, Nagaraju.

“We are sending blood samples for DNA analysis for confirmation. A special team has gone to Bangalore to bring other family members of the woman to ascertain her claims,” a police official said. After preliminary investigation, CBCID police came to the conclusion that the unidentified man was the suspect who drove the train at high speed and caused the collision.

Based on an input given by an eyewitness that the accused was seen making a telephone call minutes before he hijacked the train, special teams went to West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand to locate the persons whom he might have called. It transpired that the accused made no such call from the telephone booth.

The images captured on surveillance cameras did not match with the accused person, the sources said.

The woman could not give any information on the activities of her son or whether he belonged to any separatist organisation, the sources added.
