Instant exam: Hill students seek centre closer home

Staff Reporter

ERODE: Instant examinations for students who failed in the recent Plus Two examination are under way.

The School Education Department has set up six centres in the district for the conduct of the examinations at Kamaraj Government Higher Secondary School, Erode, Railway Colony Government Higher Secondary School, Erode, MCP Government Higher Secondary School, Dharapuram, Palaniammal Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Gobichettipalayam, and Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Bhavani.

As many as 2,894 students are writing the examinations, which started on June 22 and will end on July 2.

Of the six centres, in Gobichettipalayam 458 students are writing the examinations and they include students from Government Higher Secondary Schools in Thalavady and Panakahalli and Hasanur Government Tribal Welfare School.

These students to appear for the examinations in Gobichettipalayam, have to start as early as the previous day evening, else they risk the chance of arriving late at the examination hall.

This is because of poor bus connectivity and the time taken to reach Gobichettipalayam from Thalavady or Panakahalli.

For example, a student from Panakahalli will have to first reach the school by walk, then Thalavady by bus and from there to Sathyamangalam and then Gobichettipalayam.

All this takes at least four to five hours and is impossible to be at the examination centre on time.

Sources say as the bus connectivity is poor, the students prefer to either reach Thalavady or Sathyamangalam the previous evening and proceed from there to the examination centre.

This year, 18 students from the Thalavady school, six from Panakahalli school and a like number from the Hasanur school are writing the examination.

The students and teachers say they want the School Education Department to set up an instant examination centre in the hills as a special case.

Responding to the demand by the students, Chief Education Officer Pon. Kumar says as a special case the request will be considered and forwarded to the government for approval.
