Novel method to weed out bogus ration cards

Staff Reporter

NELLORE: The district administration is planning to launch an innovative method to weed out bogus white ration cards here. The exercise will begin from July 1.

The officials plan to set up drop boxes at all Tahsildar and MPDO offices in the district from July 1 to 10 where bogus cards are to be dropped voluntarily. Later, the Revenue and Civil Supplies department officials will constitute special teams and organise random check-ups in all mandals to identify the bogus white cardholders and book cases against them, said District Revenue Officer G.V.Jayaramaiah.

It is said that more than 1 lakh bogus ration cards exist in Nellore district . The officials are appealing to the bogus white cardholders and the Fair Price Shop dealers who are selling in black market to return the ration cards voluntarily and avoid punishment. If not, the officials will book cases against those who were caught during surprise/random checks. According to sources, the officials distributed 6,94,985 white ration cards, 56,956 ‘Anthyodaya Anna Yojana’ (AAY) cards, 1,803 ‘Annapurna’ cards and 1,36,510 pink ration cards in Nellore district. As the government announced that Arogyasri scheme would be applicable to only white ration card holders (before Assembly elections), many people took white cards through illegal route.

As the number of bogus white ration cards were more in the district, huge quantities of ration was going into the open market. In some villages, the ration shop dealers are giving some amount to the card holders and are selling rice and other commodities in black market.
