Bhandarkar joins Jha at the top

Coimbatore: Aditya Bhandarkar of Pune joined overnight leader Abhishek Jha of Bangalore at the top after the second round of the LG Tamil Nadu Open Amateur golf championship at the par-72 Coimbatore Golf Club course on Wednesday.

The winds remained wild right through the day but Bhandarkar calmly stuck to his game plan to match his first round score of two-over to stay in contention for his maiden title on the LG India Amateur tour.

Jha had a miserable front nine but rallied well to card five-over to stay atop the leader board, alongside Bhandarkar.

Gagan Verma added a 77 to his 72 in the first round and is one shot off the leaders.

Delhi’s Rashid Khan and Kolkata’s Samresh Sardar are one shot behind Verma.

Hyderabad’s Arshdeep Tiwana, the LG Southern India Open winner last week, easily turned out to be the day’s hero.

He shot a one-under but his opening round of 84 saw him alongside Pritam Haridas of Bangalore and Rahul Bajaj of Noida.

With the cut was applied at 31-over, 40 made the grade.

Bhandarkar started off parring the first six holes on Wednesday.

But on the par-3 seventh he fell short of the green and lost a stroke.

He quickly made amends by birdieing the par-5 ninth after missing a 25-foot putt for eagle.
