Police-hotel row: State seeks time

BANGALORE: The State Government on Wednesday sought time to verify figures furnished by a chain of hotels in Bangalore about the number of visitors coming to their establishments.

Empire Hotel management filed in the court details of visitors to its hotels at 10 places in Bangalore, including those who come after 11 p.m.

It said it had outlets among other places in Shivajinagar, Church Street, Castle Street, Miller Road and Koramangala.

It said lakhs of people had visited the hotels and furnished a break-up of visitors from 2005-06.

The hotel chain had challenged the imposition of restriction on timings by the city police saying that they were illegal and arbitrary.

It had said several VIPs visited its chain of hotels after 11 p.m.

The court had on an earlier hearing directed the hotel to furnish details of number of persons visiting its premises.

When the list was filed in the court, the State Government said it would verify the figures.

Justice N.K. Patil adjourned hearing of the case.

KAT order

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice P.D. Dinakaran and Justice V.G. Sabhahit upheld the 2008 absorption rules framed by the Panchayat Raj Department relating to recruitment of staff.

The Bench refused to interfere with a Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT) judgment that had upheld the 2008 rules. Some of the staff of the State Accounts Department who were deputed to the Panchayat Raj Department had challenged the rules which had given them the option of either staying back or going back to the parent department.

When the employees lost the case in the KAT, they had approached the High Court.

Notice

Justice Mohan Shantangouder ordered issue of notices to the State Government, Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE) and other respondents on a petition by Nagaratnamma and Renukamma challenging the acquisition of their lands at Gollarapalya in Yeshwanthpur, Bangalore, by the State Government for the contentious Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (BMICP) being executed by NICE.

The petitioners contended that they had purchased the agricultural lands in 1987. They said they were growing several crops on the lands and there was a temple dedicated to Durga Parameshwari. They urged the court to stay the acquisition proceedings.
