Special Correspondent

Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat will inaugurate film festival today

PANAJI: As many as 70 films from eight South Asian countries and 12 films from Iran will be screened at the four-day fourth South Asian Film Festival (SAFF) beginning here on Friday.

South Asia Foundation (SAF) has been organising the annual SAFF under the title “Dissolving Boundaries”. The festival, which moved from New Delhi to Goa last year, is all set to settle down as an annual event in Goa at the invitation of Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, said Rahul Barua, Secretary General of SAF, here on Thursday.

Mr. Kamat will inaugurate the festival on Friday.

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Goa Government are the co-sponsors of the festival. It is also being supported by the Entertainment Society of Goa and the State-owned Kala Academy. The festival is all set to extend its wings to Margao, as Ravindra Bhavan has been included as the new venue for the festival.

Four categories of films — classic, short films, documentaries and popular/ mainstream — will be screened. The festival will feature films from all eras — from Raj Kapoor to Pooja Bhatt to Onir. It will include some internationally acclaimed and award winning films from the region.

The festival will feature contemporary films such as Fashion, Welcome to Sajjanpur, and have a special musical performance at the inauguration ceremony, by the star cast and music group of an upcoming film JASHNN.

A seminar on Indian Cinema and South Asia with participation from various directors and actors from the participating countries is another highlight of the film.

Directors Prasanna Vithanage, Fathimath Nahula, Enamul Karim Nirjhar, Nakim Uddin, Ugyen Wangdi, Mahesh Bhatt, Pooja Bhatt, among others, would attend.
