‘Statute amendment imperative’

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging for an amendment to Article 371 of the Constitution to ensure justice in education and employment to the people of Hyderabad Karnataka region.

Mr. Yeddyurappa in his reply to the Prime Minister said: “I have had a careful relook at the matter. The State Government has taken steps to provide additional assistance to the backward areas of the State. Having accepted the recommendations of the high power committee for redressal of regional imbalances set up under the chairmanship of D.M. Nanjundappa, a special development plan (SDP) for eight years to reduce regional imbalance has been undertaken.”

The Chief Minister said, “even though the concept of SDP is an important initiative to overcome the regional imbalance, regional reservation is important to ensure the recruitment of local persons for the Government posts in the districts and sub-districts of the region. Unlike the other districts of erstwhile Hyderabad State which are now part of Andhra Pradesh and have the protection under Article 371-D, candidates from the districts of the Hyderabad Karnataka area have been placed at a disadvantage in the absence of reservation. We, therefore, continue to hold the view that a constitutional amendment is imperative in the context of ensuring justice to the people of the Hyderabad Karnataka.”
