KOLKATA: Unseeded Siddharth Anand stunned second-seeded Sattwik Sinha Ray in the pre-quarterfinals of the under-18 boys’ singles match of the Calcutta Punjab Club BTA junior tennis tournament here on Thursday. Playing true to his seeding Ray ran up a lead of 7-4 in a best-of-15 games match. Ray squandered two match points and lost the 12th game to his opponent, who won the next two games to square the score 7-7. Anand was all over Ray in the tie-breaker, which he won 7-3. Other seeded players including top-seeded Sanjib Kerketta, fourth-seeded Sukrit Guha and fifth-seeded Rohit Rampuria progressed to the quarterfinals winning their matches easily. In the girls’ under-18 pre-quarterfinals unseeded Priyam Periwal ended the run of third seed Mallika Arora. Top-seeded Andrea Das and second seeded Tulana Nan were the only two seeds surviving in the draw. Important results (pre-quarterfinals): Boys singles: U-18: Sanjib Kerketta bt Shombhu Bag 8-0; Mohammad Sarfaraz bt Harsh Gurnani 8-5; Shreedhar Gaggar bt Raghav Khullar 8-6; Rohit Rampuria bt Bilawal Suri 8-3; Shukrit Guha bt Aayush Poddar 8-4; Siddharth Anand bt Sattwik Sinha Ray 8-7(3).
