Funds for Citizen Consumer Clubs in schools

CUDDALORE: Citizen Consumer Clubs, comprising students, have been formed in 30 schools in Cuddalore district.

Each school has been given an annual grant of Rs. 10,000 to create consumer awareness through various programmes, according to Collector P. Seetharaman.

In a statement released here, he said the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department had taken steps to create awareness among consumers. The formation of the clubs was one such step.

In each club there was a minimum of 50 students. Representatives of voluntary organisations were engaged by these schools to educate club members about consumer protection Acts, consumer rights and legal measures to protect consumers’ interests.

Mr. Seetharaman said that during 2007-08, Rs. 1.5 lakh was disbursed, Rs. 10,000 each, in the first phase to 15 schools to conduct such programmes. While the schools were granted Rs. 8,000 each to meet expenses, voluntary organisations were given Rs. 2,000 each.

In the second phase, Mr. Seetharaman on Wednesday handed over Rs. 90,000 to the Thiruvalluvar Higher Secondary School at Orathur, the Government Higher Secondary School at Per Periyankuppam, the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School at Nellikuppam and Government High Schools at Killai, Palur, Kullanchavadi, Pudupettai, Nallur and Chidambaram.

The amount had been sent to the Dharmalingam Chettiar Higher Secondary School at Srimushnam, the Government Higher Secondary School at Kozhipakkam, the St. Anne’s Girls Higher Secondary School in Cuddalore, the Subbaraya Chettiar Girls Higher Secondary School at Panruti, the NLC Boys Higher Secondary School at Block 10 in Neyveli and the Government Higher Secondary School at Lalpettai, Mr. Seetharaman said.
