Sonia sets her sights on food security Act

New Delhi: After the rural job guarantee scheme, Congress president Sonia Gandhi is now focussing on the plan for a national food security Act, seeking to make it the UPA’s flagship scheme in its second term.

The UPA chairperson, in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has made a strong pitch for providing 35 kg of cereals at Rs.3 a kg each month to the poor. She has asked Dr. Singh to fulfil the party’s promise of enacting such a law. Ms. Gandhi said the food security Act was a prominent commitment made by the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said Ms. Gandhi had suggested expanding the scope of beneficiaries to include women, physically challenged and single parent, apart from BPL cardholders. — PTI
