MANGALORE: Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) S.R. Nayak has alleged that the State Government is not cooperating in effective functioning of the commission. Mr. Nayak told presspersons here on Thursday that despite repeated petitions the Government was not coming forward to provide the SHRC with adequate funds or manpower to function. Reiterating his demand for appointing special police officers of the rank of Superintendent of Police at each of the six police ranges in the State under the SHRC, Mr. Nayak said that the demand was there for the last two years. DemandPointing out that “grave violations of human rights” were being committed by the State’s police, he said: “We need to have an independent investigation team under the SHRC comprising police officers to investigate the crimes against the people by the police in the State.” Mr. Nayak said that he had taken cognisance of the recent police cases filed against the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists for exposing a scam in the Women and Child Welfare Department related to supply of outdated food to pregnant women and children under the Integrated Child Development Services Scheme (ICDSS). Expressing concern over the cases over the issue, he said that his action was based on the reports that appeared in sections of the media. Blaming the officials of the Women and Child Welfare Department for the irregularities, he said that he found police cases against the DYFI activists “indefensible”. He said that he had asked the district administration for a detailed report on the matter.
